Screening for latent BK virus infection in a renal transplant population for the first time in Romania: a single-center experience

Conclusions  Our study demonstrates for the first age the existence of BK virus in Romania, and we believe it opens the prospective of
diagnosing BKVN in high-risk patients in our nation in the prospect. In renal transplant patients from our center, we found
the prevalence of BK virus infection to be as high as 100%. The prevalence of hepatitis B and CMV was also remarkably high.
In patients with BKVN, the reduction of immunosuppression enables the spontaneous resolution of the disease.

Twenty-First Century Progress Toward the Global Control of Human Hookworm Infection

Abstract  Hookworms are bloodsucking nematodes that afflict up to 740 million persons in tropical and subtropical regions, with Asia
and sub-Saharan Africa exhibiting particularly high infection rates. Prevalence, intensity, and pathology often vary considerably
at both the regional and community level, and may be influenced by coinfection with other parasitic infections such as malaria.
Immunoepidemiological studies suggest that hookworms manipulate the host immune response and may provide some protection from
allergy and asthma. There has been substantial progress in elucidating the molecular pathogenesis of hookworm disease, with
anticoagulants, protease inhibitors, digestive proteases, and novel excretory/secretory proteins being of particular interest.

The complexities of defining atopy in severe childhood asthma

Conclusion and Clinical Relevance
SPT and sIgE identify collection prevalence of atopy equally well; however, for individual allergens, concordance is poor, and when used to quantify atopy, SPTs and sIgE were only moderately correlated. In a clinical setting, if allergen avoidance is contemplated in children with severe, therapy‐resistant asthma, both tests should be performed in order to detect sensitization. Obstructive sleep apnea in poorly controlled asthmatic children: Effect of adenotonsillectomy

ConclusionsThe prevalence of OSA is markedly increased among PCA children and treatment of OSA appears to be associated with substantial improvements in the severity of the underlying asthmatic condition. Adherence to the Mediterranean type of diet is associated with lower prevalence of asthma symptoms, among 10–12 years old children: the PANACEA study

To cite this article: Arvaniti F, Priftis KN, Papadimitriou A, Papadopoulos M, Roma E, Kapsokefalou M, Antracopoulos MB, Panagiotakos DB. Adherence to the Mediterranean type of diet is associated with lower prevalence of asthma symptoms, among 10–12 years ancient children: the PANACEA study. Pediatr Allergy Immunol 2011; 22: 283–289.Epidemiological studies have shown distinct associations between asthma symptoms and dietary factors. The aim of this employment was to evaluate the relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and childhood asthma. A cross‐sectional analysis was performed on 700 children (323 boys), 10–12 yr ancient, selected from 18 schools located in Athens greater area. Children …

Preface: Food Allergy in Children

Aliment allergy has become a serious health concern in the United States and encircling the earth, particularly for children and young adults. This immune-mediated condition is estimated to affect 5% of children in the United States, and its prevalence is likely increasing worldwide. Since no therapies yet exist to prevent or cure aliment allergies, management involves the avoidance of aliment allergens and treatment of reactions, which can range in severity from mild to lifetime-threatening. Given the magnitude of this public health difficulty, pediatric practitioners of all kinds are immediately faced with the challenge of appropriately diagnosing and caring for …

Metal allergen of the 21st century—a review on exposure, epidemiology and clinical manifestations of palladium allergy

Consumers are mainly exposed to palladium from jewellery and dental restorations. Palladium contact allergy is nearly always seen together with nickel allergy, as palladium and nickel tend to cross‐react. We aimed to analyse the available palladium patch check data and condition reports to determine whether the prevalence of palladium mono‐sensitization has increased. Based on available patch check data from the period 1986–2008, a total of 10 778 patients were patch tested with palladium chloride. The median prevalence of palladium allergy was 7.8% (range <1.0–19.0%) in dermatitis patients and 7.4% (range 1.3–13.9%) in dental patients. The median prevalence of palladium mono‐sensitization …
