AbstractGroup A streptococcus (GAS) harbours distinct virulence factors, including M protein (coded through the emm gene) and superantigens (SAgs). are extracellular harmful toxins that directly activate the defense mechanisms by cross‐binding towards the HLA class II molecule and T cell receptor (TCR), therefore leading to activation as high as 30% from the T cells and subsequent massive secretion of cytokines. Forty‐eight GAS strains isolated from patients at Norwegian hospitals between 1988 and 2004 were incorporated within this study.
